Welcome to a brand-new school year in Nursery! We are so excited to start this journey together and can’t wait to see all the learning, laughter, and new discoveries ahead. A very warm welcome to all of our new and returning families—we are looking forward to a fantastic year filled with fun activities, new friendships, and wonderful memories!

Maths in Autumn 1
Pattern
Patterns are everywhere — in clothes, music, nature, and daily routines. Helping your child notice and create patterns builds early math skills, thinking skills, and even language development.
Why Patterns Matter
Math foundations: Understanding patterns leads to recognising number sequences and shapes.
Problem solving: Spotting what comes next supports logical thinking.
Creativity: Making patterns encourages imagination.
🏡 Simple Pattern Activities at Home
1. Spot the Pattern
Look for stripes, dots, zigzags, or repeating designs on clothes, tiles, or curtains.
Ask: “What comes next?” or “Can you find another stripe like this one?”
2. Clap, Tap, Jump
Make a sound pattern: clap, clap, stomp — and let your child copy.
Change it up: tap, tap, clap — can they guess the next move?
Great for rhythm and memory!
3. Snack Time Patterns
Use food to make patterns: grape, cracker, grape, cracker…
Invite your child to continue the pattern — and then eat it!
4. Toy Sorting & Lining Up
Line up cars by colour: red, blue, red, blue…
Sort LEGO bricks into size or colour patterns.
5. Nature Patterns
Go on a walk and spot repeating shapes: petals, leaves, tree rings.
Collect objects and arrange them into your own pattern at home.
Behaviour Expectations in Nursery
We use social stories to help students understand what’s expected in different situations. These short stories show examples of positive behaviour and guide students on how to respond appropriately. Social stories help children feel confident, supported, and ready to succeed at school.

Phonics in during the Autumn Term
We are focusing on Phase 1 Phonics. Before children begin learning written letters, Phase 1 focuses on tuning their ears to speech and environmental sounds to build essential listening and speaking skills.
Through playful activities, the children will explore:
Environmental, Instrumental & Body Sounds: Listening to everyday noises, instruments, and rhythm patterns like clapping.
Rhyme & Alliteration: Spotting rhyming words and playing with starting sounds in words (e.g., Silly Snake).
Oral Blending: Playing listening games to hear and combine sounds into words (e.g., hearing c-a-t and recognizing cat).
How to help at home: Sing nursery rhymes together, point out everyday sounds on walks, and read stories together daily!
Parts of my face
As part of our 'All About Me' topic, our Nursery children have been exploring the different parts of their faces. We practiced naming and identifying features like eyes, noses, ears, and mouths. To build on our learning and practicing our fine motor skills, the children sat together and drew fantastic portraits of one another. We are so proud of their careful observation and creative artwork!
Parts of my body
We have been exploring all about themselves as we learned to identify different parts of our body! Through fun songs, interactive games, and hands-on activities, the children have been naming and pointing to their eyes, ears, hands, toes, and more.
