Autumn 1

Week 8

This half term in RE, we’ve been exploring the question: What makes certain places sacred? with a focus on mosques, Makkah, and other sacred places.

We discussed places that feel sacred to us personally, and why they hold special meaning. We also learned about the importance of Makkah to Muslims. Additionally, we explored the key features of a mosque, such as the dome and the minaret, and what we’d find inside, including the prayer hall, the mihrab, and the ablution area. We also discussed items used during prayer in a mosque, like the topi (a cap), a prayer mat, and tasbih beads.

Week 7

Year 2's Great Fire of London Forest School Experience.

This week, Year 2 had a fantastic time taking part in a Great Fire of London-themed Forest School Experience Day. The children stepped back in time, imagining they were in Thomas Farriner’s bakery, as they made damper bread over a campfire. Under the guidance and supervision of our Forest School leaders, the children also learned how to create fire sparks safely.

The day concluded with an exciting and hands-on activity where the children put out real fires, just like in 1666! They formed a line and passed buckets of water to extinguish the flames, experiencing first-hand how people fought fires during the Great Fire of London.

Week 6

This week in our Science lessons, we tested and compared the suitability of different materials to build a den that would keep our teddy dry. We built four dens, each made from a different material: foil, plastic, cardboard, and cotton. Here is a summary of our investigation results:

  • Plastic: We found was the most suitable material because it's waterproof and kept the teddy dry.
  • Foil: Provided some water resistance but was not fully waterproof.
  • Cardboard: Absorbed water and did not protect the teddy well.
  • Cotton: Absorbed water immediately, making it the least suitable for keeping the teddy dry

Week 5

This week in PSHE we have been learning that drinking sugary drinks can damage our teeth.

To investigate this we set up an investigation. We soaked egg shells in three different kinds of drinks. Cordial, water and a sugary sports drink.

We looked at the damage of the surface of the egg shells after one day and then again after three days.

Our results showed that the top coating of the egg shells that were soaked in cordial and a sugary sports drink were damaged after one day and even more so on day three. We likened this to the damage that could happen to the enamel on our teeth.

The egg shell that was soaked in water showed no damage at all.

We discussed that this indicates that water is the healthiest choice of drink to keep our teeth healthy.

We also discussed that is is really important to brush our teeth twice a day.

Week 4.

In Science this term, we are learning all about the properties of different materials!

This week, we began our Science lesson by predicting which materials would be the most suitable for building a waterproof den.

Next, we conducted a fair test in which we poured 100 ml of water over foil, cardboard, cotton, and plastic. Some of our predictions  were accurate, but cotton totally tricked us – we thought it would be waterproof, but it wasn’t!

Next week,  we're building the dens! Stay tuned to find out which material wins the waterproof challenge!

Week 3.

This term, Year 2 are focussing on the place value of two-digit numbers.

This week, we have been exploring the various ways to partition a two-digit number by using a variety of concrete, pictorial and abstract methods.

Week 2

This week in Year 2, we focused on PSHE. We read The Worry Dolls by Anthony Browne and then made our own worry dolls.

We keep them in our trays and use them whenever we feel worried or anxious.
