Summer 1

Culture Fest

We had an amazing day on Friday during our Culture Fest celebrations. Year 2 taught pupils from other classes all about the Windrush Generation and how they helped to rebuild the country after the Second World War. We listened to Caribbean music and created a textile print in the style of Althea Mcnish. We also visited other classes to share in their learning too.

Science

We had a wonderful time in our Science lesson this week. We went exploring in our Forest School area. We looked closely at different microhabitats and compared what we had found. We discovered that all microhabitats are not the same but they each meet the needs of the plants and animals that live there.

English

Year 2 have had an important job this week. Our Forest School Team have asked for our expertise and help in writing instructions on 'How To Make A Bird Feeder.'

We are experts at instructional writing, so we were up for the challenge.

This week we made some bird feeders and next week we are going to be writing the instructions on how to make them,

Watch this space for our finished instructions!

Here's one we made earlier (and yes the birds loved it) !

Science

In Science this week we have been out and about in our school grounds to observe a variety of plants and animals in their habitat. We had great fun observing insects in the flower beds, mini-beasts under logs and some different species of birds nesting. We also spotted some mice holes in the school field but we didn't manage to spot any field mice!

Geography

In Geography this week the Year 2 pupils have used Google Earth to locate some of the world's most amazing places including:

Mount Etna

The Great Pyramid of Giza

Statue of Liberty

Great Barrier Reef

Great Wall of China

Mount Erebus

Amazon Rainforest

Children could discuss human and physical features and name the continent each place is found in. E.g. The Amazon Rainforest is located in South America.

English

Year 2 pupils have created a text map for our non- fiction unit of instructional writing 'How to make a bug hotel'. Children can orally rehearse the text including actions. We can't wait to see children's own instructional writing by the end of this half term. Good Luck!
