Mathematics
Activity:
To compare and order different lengths
How to do it:
Watch the video
Get some string/wool cut 4 pieces of different lengths.
You can cut paper into strips and use different lengths of paper if you don’t have any string.
Put your different pieces of string in order starting with the shortest going to the longest.
Which piece is the longest?
Which piece is the shortest?
Label your pieces of string a, b, c, d.
Use mathematical language to explain the different lengths of the string.
For example piece b is longer than piece a.
Piece a is shorter than piece b.
If you find it tricky:
Use 2 pieces of string and discuss which is the shortest piece and which is the longest piece.
Repeat with 2 different pieces of string.
Challenge:
Complete the activity and label your pisces of string.
Tell your child a statement and they have to tell you if it is correct or not correct. Ask them to give reasons for their answer.
Make sure that at times your statements are not correct.
For example Piece C is longer than piece b, is that correct or not correct?
Piece a is shorter than piece, is that correct or not correct?
