Summer 1
In year 1 the children have been taking part in our wonderful Culture Fest Day. The children focused their learning on the Chinese New Year and had a go at presenting a wide range of facts to different pupils from different classes. They had a go at creating lanterns and flying dragons.
What wonderful geographers the children have been this week!
Each day they have investigated and recorded the weather, temperature and wind direction. They have even explored how the changes in weather can affect their shadow. The children have worked extremely hard to understand how to use a thermometer, compass and a wind streamer. Well done year 1!
This week in Year 1 the children have moved their English learning onto the innovation stage of their information text. The children have used a variety of expanded noun phrases to label a diagram of a Tree Giant. Here are some examples :
This week we took a lovely walk around the school grounds and enjoyed observing and describing weather during the spring season. We have observed that the weather is changeable as we have noticed rain, sun, cloud and wind over the last week.
We also spotted other signs of spring such as daffodils growing, more green leaves growing on trees, blossoms and many more beautiful plants.
In Year 1, we have been using continuous provision to explore our English skills. We have been learning all about Tree Giants, so each class made green leaf hand prints to make our very own Tree Giant in provision. We also took time practicing forming our letters correctly into the glitter trays, and using our pencil to trace and write letters on the botanical worksheet.

This week year 1 have been working on classifying different animals into 'Carnivores, Omnivores and Herbivores'. They were given animal fact cards, and asked to classify them into the correct group based on their diets. They enjoyed applying their new learning into this activity and were able to have open discussions about why those animals were in the correct group or not.
